ADHD Therapy might be perfect for you if:
You can be impulsive or have big mood swings and it’s impacting your relationships
You’re exhausted but feel like you're not accomplishing anything
You want to work with a neuro-affirming therapist who has lived experience and understands what you’re talking about
You have the best of intentions to stick to a routine but it always falls apart
You’ve always felt different, and that things should come easier to you
There’s a mean, critical voice in your head
You were diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and are trying to figure out what to do now
Does it matter if my therapist understands ADHD?
We understand ADHD from both medical and social perspectives. And from lived experience - that means some of our therapists have ADHD themselves.
A therapist who doesn’t understand ADHD can miss or misinterpret things like exhaustion, mood swings, or procrastination for depression or anxiety when they’re really symptoms of ADHD. An informed understanding means you’ll get informed solutions.
The medical model of ADHD looks at how ADHD shows up within a person, usually from a neurological perspective. ADHD therapy that comes from a medical view will spend time exploring things like executive functioning, medication, mood, and then looking for solutions, skills, or strategies to support someone in areas where they may be struggling. This is important, but we know that these aren’t the only ways people are impacted by ADHD.
ADHD therapy that comes from the social model will look to understand how the person is impacted by ADHD in the context of their environment, including family, friends, work, and school, and in the relationship they have with themself. This understanding will explore things like shame, guilt, fear, loneliness, and isolation - all emotions that tend to come with living with ADHD.
What is Executive Dysfunction?
Executive function skills are a group of mental skills needed for planning, organizing, prioritizing, and completing tasks. For adults and adolescents, executive dysfunction can feel like constantly being “stuck,” despite knowing exactly what needs to be done. These challenges are not due to laziness or lack of effort—they are neurobiological and require targeted strategies to manage. Specific executive functions include:
Working memory
Sustained attention
Organization
Time management
Planning & prioritizing
Emotional control
Flexibility
Response inhibition
Metacognition
Goal directed persistence
Task initiation
Why Executive Dysfunction Matters in Therapy
Understanding executive dysfunction is crucial in ADHD therapy because these struggles often impact daily functioning, self-esteem, and relationships. When left unaddressed, they can contribute to chronic stress, anxiety, and frustration. In therapy, we focus on:
Identifying your unique executive function challenges
Developing personalized strategies to manage tasks, time, and responsibilities
Supporting emotional regulation when tasks feel overwhelming
Building sustainable routines that reduce daily stress
By addressing executive dysfunction in therapy, you can experience meaningful improvements in productivity, confidence, and quality of life.
