Struggling to Navigate Trust, Jealousy, or Ground Rules in Your Open Relationship?
Maybe you're asking yourself:
Do we keep renegotiating the same ground rules and still stepping on landmines neither of us saw coming?
Is this jealousy actually about my values, or is it something else I haven't figured out yet?
Are we thinking about opening our relationship, but neither of us knows how to start that conversation?
Do I feel like the "backup plan" when my partner's other relationship gets the good stuff?
Am I doing the math every time I see extended family about who knows about my relationship and who doesn't?
How do three or more of us co-parent when there's no map for how that's supposed to work?
Maybe you're lying awake replaying a conversation that went sideways, or rehearsing how to raise a boundary you're scared will sound like an accusation. Maybe you've been polyamorous or non-monogamous for years and things are genuinely good, but one thing, a new partner, a shift in a metamour relationship, a family member finding out, has knocked things off balance. Or maybe you're monogamous right now and quietly wondering whether a different structure fits who you are.
With the right support, you can build a relationship (or relationships) with clear agreements, honest communication, and a lot less guesswork.
You're Not the Only One Figuring This Out
Consensual non-monogamy is a lot more common than the silence around it suggests. A 2019 nationally representative study of Canadian adults found that about 1 in 5 had been in an open relationship at some point, and roughly 4% of people currently in a relationship described it as open (Fairbrother et al., The Journal of Sex Research, 2019).
Most of us grew up with monogamy as the only relationship script anyone handed us, so there's no template for how to have these conversations, set agreements, or manage jealousy when it shows up. It's common to try to sort it out informally first, sometimes after one person has already started stepping outside the relationship rather than starting the harder conversation together. That's not a character flaw. Jealousy, uncertainty, and the urge to protect what you have are normal responses that just need somewhere honest to go.
With the right guidance, those same instincts can become the foundation for clearer, more resilient agreements.
How Polyamory & Non-Monogamy Therapy Works
What Is Non-Monogamy-Informed Therapy?
It's relationship therapy that starts from the assumption that monogamy isn't the only healthy way to structure a relationship, and that whatever structure you're building deserves the same care as any other. We get clear on what you actually want out of the work, then check in throughout to make sure sessions are creating real movement, not just talking in circles.
What Happens in Sessions
We draw on a blend of approaches, not a single formula, because most clients care more about getting unstuck than about the name of the method. Expect to work on:
Naming your actual ground rules and agreements, instead of the ones you assumed you both understood
Getting underneath jealousy or insecurity to what it's actually protecting
Communicating with a partner, a metamour, or a whole polycule without it turning into a blow-up
Deciding whether opening up, closing down, or changing your structure is right for you
Navigating disclosure, coming out, or staying private with family, friends, or kids, on your own terms
Rebuilding trust after a breach of an agreement
How This Is Different
We see individuals, couples, and polycules, and yes, that means more than two people in the room at once. This isn't generic couples counselling with the word "polyamory" added on. It starts from real familiarity with non-monogamous and open relationship structures, so you're not stuck explaining or defending your relationship before you can get to the work.

How This Helps With Trust, Jealousy, Ground Rules & Coming Out
When trust has been shaken, by a broken agreement or just the uncertainty of something new, we help you name specifically what was broken and what repair looks like, instead of vague reassurances. When jealousy shows up, we help you get curious about what it's protecting rather than treating it as proof something is wrong.
Ground rules that keep failing usually aren't failing because you're bad at this. They're often built on assumptions nobody said out loud. We'll help you build agreements you both, or all, actually agreed to, that hold up under real conditions.
If you're weighing whether to come out about your relationship structure to family, colleagues, or your kids, we'll help you think through what to say, to whom, and on what timeline, without pressure to be more public or more private than feels right. And if you're co-parenting across a polycule, we'll help you build the clarity around roles and decisions that most parenting resources never think to address.
Without support, these patterns tend to repeat: the same fight about the same boundary, the same silence with family, the same spiral of jealousy with no outlet. With support, you'll leave with language for what you're feeling and agreements you can actually keep
Meet Your Polyamory & Non-Monogamy Therapist
Ramak Jaberizadeh, MACP, RP is a Registered Psychotherapist (regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario) seeing clients in Ajax and virtually across Ontario. She works with individuals, couples, and polycules at every stage, from just starting to consider a change to years into an established structure.
Ramak blends the Gottman Method, narrative therapy, CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and solution-focused work, chosen to fit what's in front of her rather than a single formula. She gets clear on your goals from session one, checks in regularly to keep the work moving toward them, and brings warmth and genuine humour, because this work is hard and it helps to make it sustainable. Expect gentle challenge, too: she'll name the patterns she notices rather than let you drift politely around what needs to be said.
Ramak also works extensively with queer clients on identity exploration, coming out, and relationships of every structure. The Relationship Agency has been named a Three Best Rated therapy practice three years running (2024, 2025, 2026) and a 2024 Canada Choice Award winner, and our team reflects the same range of identities and lived experience as the clients we work with.
Your Questions About Polyamory & Non-Monogamy Therapy
-
That's a reasonable place to start. A lot of clients come in exploring, not deciding, and therapy is a low-pressure place to think it through out loud with someone who won't push you toward or away from any particular structure.
-
Individual therapy is a great place to start on your own. Understanding your jealousy, getting clear on what you need, deciding how to raise something with a partner, that work happens just as well one-on-one. You're welcome to bring a partner, or your whole polycule, into sessions later.
-
Individual sessions are $180; sessions with two or more partners (couples or polycules) are $280. We offer direct billing through TELUS Health eClaims to most major Canadian insurers, including Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, and Green Shield.
-
Yes. We regularly meet with more than two people in a session, and Ramak has worked with polycules navigating everything from ground rules to co-parenting across three or more adults. Bring whoever is part of the conversation.
-
No. Our job is to help everyone in the room be heard and help you build agreements that work for the people actually living them, not to referee who's "right." That applies whether it's two people or five.
-
That's common, especially if a previous therapist wasn't familiar with non-monogamous structures and treated your relationship as the problem. Real talk: therapy that starts from "have you considered becoming monogamous" won't get you anywhere. Familiarity with your structure changes what's possible.
Ready to Build Relationships That Actually Work For You?
You don't have to keep guessing at ground rules, sitting with jealousy alone, or wondering whether your relationship structure is "allowed" to need support. We'll match you with a therapist who gets it, no explaining your relationship from scratch required.
We'll match you with the right therapist within 24 hours, no waitlist, no hassle.
