Are You Struggling to Find a Therapist Who Speaks Your Language?

There’s a specific kind of loneliness that comes with not being able to express your inner world in the language it lives in. Emotions don’t translate neatly. The word angustia isn’t the same as “anxiety.” Desahogarse — that feeling of finally getting something off your chest — doesn’t have a clean English equivalent. When you’re in therapy, those differences matter.

And in couples therapy, where things move fast and emotions run high, finding the right words isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s everything. What you’re trying to say to your partner needs to land accurately, not approximately.

Does This Sound Like You?

  • Do you hold back in conversations because you can’t find the exact word in English for what you’re feeling?

  • Have you tried therapy before but felt like something got lost in translation?

  • Are you and your partner arguing in two languages — and it feels like neither of you is really being heard?

  • Do you feel caught between the culture you grew up in and the one you’re living in now?

  • Are you carrying stress about family expectations, immigration, work, or relationships — and have no one to talk to who truly gets it?

You’ve been thinking about therapy for a while. Maybe you’ve even tried it before — sitting across from a well-meaning therapist, searching for the right words in English while the feelings you need to express live in Spanish. You leave the session feeling like you only got halfway there.

Or maybe you haven’t tried at all, because the idea of unpacking something painful in your second language feels exhausting before you even start.

You don’t have to keep translating your pain. Therapy in Spanish changes everything — and it’s available right here in Ajax and across Ontario.

Gabriela Arriola works from a psychoanalytic and psychodynamic foundation — which means she doesn’t just focus on symptoms. She goes deeper, helping you understand the patterns behind what you’re experiencing. She’ll integrate emotion-focused techniques, EMDR for trauma processing, and practical strategies depending on what you need. Sessions happen in person at our Ajax office or virtually anywhere in Ontario. Your first step is a free 20-minute consultation where you can ask questions, share what you’re going through, and see if it feels like a good fit. Todo en español, si lo prefieres.

You’re Not the Only One — and Seeking Help Is an Act of Strength

If you’ve hesitated to reach out, you’re in good company. Research shows that Spanish-speaking communities across North America consistently face higher barriers to mental health care — not because of a lack of need, but because of a lack of access. A 2015 American Psychological Association survey found that fewer than 6% of psychologists in North America offered services in Spanish. That’s a massive gap between how many people need support and how many can actually get it in their own language.

On top of that, cultural attitudes about therapy can make it harder to take that first step. In many Latin American cultures, mental health challenges are traditionally handled within the family — or not talked about at all. Seeking professional help can feel like admitting weakness, or like you’re airing private business to a stranger. You might have heard “eso no se habla” growing up. That message stays with you.

But here’s the thing: recognizing that you need support — and going after it — doesn’t mean your family or your culture failed you. It means you’re doing something courageous. And doing it in Spanish, with someone who understands where you’re coming from, makes all the difference.

How Spanish-Speaking Therapy Works at The Relationship Agency
